Hi there, and welcome to F-Jam Studios. Your project is all setup and ready for people to browse and audition. If you want to post more projects, we have no limits.

You should update your blogger profile, and post a talent profile at , that will get you added to the mass invitation lists...

I like this Rego. I'd like to make a suggestion if I may. I'd like to see you go halftime for a short time in the middle in there somewhere, just to break it up. It is a great start to the song, but it goes full tilt through the whole thing. It'd help it to change it up even if for just a short time, and you can go back into the fast pace.

I'm going to try some drums on this for ya. It's a little fast to try classical instruments I think. I could be wrong. If you saw fit to arrange it to go half time for a littlewhile you might have a better chance of getting classical instruments in there.

I guess we'll change the genre on this to "Pop". I just went on what you wrote about this, but now that I've listened I think this a pop song.

Do you have the guitar and vocals as separate tracks?

Nice one!

You're right- in fact, this was based on a pop song by Men Without Hats (with different lyrics). I didn't change the pace from the original.

I'm sure I recorded the guitar and vocals as separate tracks, though it might take me a little while to find the old backups.

You have a good voice and a good idea here Rego. I'd like to work with you on it. Having the separates would help me. If you areopen to ideas I'd like to try some drums to audition on it, and perhaps suggest some changes in the arrangement. No worries if you don't like it/them (suggestions), but I'd like to try and see what you think. You have the bassis of a good piece here, and with some work it could be something noteworthy and perhaps cd ready (market)?

I'd like to get the separatres from you and too the lyrics just to get a feel for what you are settingup here, and then we can throw some ideas at you and you can either accept them ot point me in a different direction.

Nice work!

Oh BTW:

I hear other tracks that interest me as far as auditioning too (on your myspace). You can either start some of those as projects here or if you want I can pick on or two out from there and we can work on it here. The more you post the more ideas and auditions you'll get and you can begin developing them. You have a lot of talent and I'm looking forward to working with ya. I think you'll find others will too. I'll bee watching.

No hurry man. Take your time. That's the beauty of working via the net like this.

You do have FIle Manager access now right?

Rego said...

Hi Keeper, thanks for the encouragement! What other songs are you interested in? (I just verified I have file manager access)

So I found my old project files from this period, but it looks like the vocals and guitar were recorded together (except for that third verse section). If the vocals need to be louder when you add other instruments, I could double the vocals with a new track. In other songs I like to combine a breathy vocal take with a more conventional one anyway.

Here's a link to the lyrics and chords for the acoustic songs that are linked from my website/myspace blog entry (this song included). If you open the "bookmarks" section, you'll be able to navigate to each song: http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~regosen/mp3/RegoSen-DecadeOfNovembers.pdf

Well that's unfortunate Rego. It has more to do with timing that volume. I'm a drummer, mind you so timing is very important to me. There are places I'd want to tweak the timing of your guitar without affecting the vocals. It's always better to have the tracks separated for better control no matter the reason.

I'll see what I can do with the mix, but you wouldn't really want to try to use such a mix in a final would you?

Any chance of re-recording so we have separate tracks?

There were a couple I was looking at. The one that comes to mind is "Unsent Letter".

Maybe we should go directly to a project that you do have separates for.

Rego said...

Yeah, I recorded it years ago, before I knew better than to record parts together. :( I didn't even bother using a click track for any of the acoustic songs, so would a tweak here and there be enough to make them compatible with drums?

Here's a song I have separates for. It's part of a political album in the works: http://ccrma.stanford.edu/~regosen/mp3/apw/Rego%20Sen%20-%20Telecommunications%20Act%20of%201996%20(demo).mp3

The demo in the link has synth drums, which badly need to be replaced by the real thing (and they don't need to follow what the synth is doing). I'm open to re-do any of the tracks or let someone else have a stab at the instrumentation. Let me know if it's something that would be appropriate for a project posting.

Ok I'll have a look Rego. I think this I Knew Her Name would be a good one to develop if you'd like to redo the vocs and guitar to a click. I'll let ya know what I think about the other song. Tomorrow some time I'll go back to your myspace and have a listen some more too.

I could probably find a speed that is close that what you have mixed here already but it'd bound to mess with the vocals. It'd be better to re-record and we'll do it up right.
I will post something for ya soon and maybe you can play against my drums if pass an audition.

I had a gander at your PDF (A Decade Of Novembers). I must say Rego you have a way with words. Lots of catch stuff in there. Just the title paints pictures. I'm posting the lyrics/chords out of there for referrence. I'm planning to work with this a bit today if time permits.

Yeah I like this Rego. There are definitely timing problems, a few pitch problems on the vocals, and it might be a little too hot on the input on vocals, and maybe at the very top of your range. But there is nothing there that can't be fixed I think. So if you want to post the separates in a new project on this one, we can go to work on it. Preferably dry. No effects on the vocals etc for now. Catchy subject matter.

I'm near expert at fixing the sort of problems I mentioned above with the exception of signals that are too hot. If the vocal input is too hot that will need to be recorded again. When you really get going there it sounds like you might be getting too close to the mic and the signal gets too hot, and distorts. I'll know better once I get to look at the separates...

Good tunes man! They need good production in a bad way but you are in the right place for that fix... I like your ideas and I think I can help you produce them right. If you are willing to work on them.

Yep this is a good tune guys

and I think you are right about the speed Fred,it's a little much all the way through.

An alternative idea for you why not slow thw whole thing down and double time the middle......just a thought

good luck

Hey Rego
I had a little play with this today, hope you dont mind.

I slowed the track down a tad to give a little more space.

The drums aren't really tight as I did this just as a sketch but its a starting point if you feel like it.

No probs if you dont as I said it didnt take me long and I did it just as an experiment.

Cheers

Ian

Hi Ian, thanks for looking into this!

Now that I hear it slower, it's clear to me that the song sounds better slowed down. Since I had recorded it way sharp (oops), I just tried transposing it back down to C without a timestretch, which took care of both issues. BTW, I noticed that in your version it's tuned up in addition to being slowed down. Did you do that on purpose, or was that the effect of a plug-in?

As for the instrumentation, I feel like a full-on drum track distances the song a bit, which I want to keep intimate-sounding. I was originally opposed to having drums on any of my acoustic songs altogether, but now I realize something like hand drums could accomplish the switch to half-time in the chorus while keeping the feel intimate.

I really like the switch to half-time in the chorus, by the way. I wouldn't have gotten it if you didn't post the drum track, so thanks for taking the time to do that!

Hey Rego

No problem it really took no time at all

I reduced the speed simply by resampling and just raised the pitch in cubase.

I cant hear classical instruments and hand drums but definately the Men Without Hats feel

Hopefully Fred will come up with some idea's

Give me shout if I can help

Ian
